Explore Research

We investigate emerging technologies through their scientific foundations, engineering constraints and commercial potential. Our research focuses on what has been demonstrated and what it takes to scale.

Advanced Materials
Layered Materials and Wafer Study-1.png

Materials can enable new device architectures and lower-emission industrial processes, but useful properties alone do not ensure adoption. We examine how production methods, integration requirements and economics determine whether promising materials can become practical technologies.

Our current research spans two-dimensional semiconductors and cement decarbonisation, from transistor fabrication challenges to alternative production routes for essential construction materials.

Key questions

  • Can material performance survive manufacturing and integration?

  • Can production meet requirements for quality, throughput and cost?

  • What must change for an alternative to compete with established technologies?

Unconventional Computing

Alternative computing approaches seek to exploit physical processes and problem structure to improve computational efficiency. We assess where these approaches offer credible advantages, and whether those advantages persist beyond individual devices or laboratory demonstrations.

Our current research examines probabilistic, thermodynamic and reversible computing, including their overlapping principles, performance benchmarks and paths toward scalable systems.

Key questions

  • Which computational problems suit each approach?

  • Do reported gains hold against relevant benchmarks and at the full-system level?

  • What limits scaling, integration and practical use?

Clean Energy Systems
Modular Hydrogen Electrolysis Installation-2.png

The value of an energy technology depends on the system around it. We examine how production costs, infrastructure and end-use requirements shape the feasibility of clean energy pathways.

Our current research focuses on hydrogen, its changing economics and its potential role in industries that are difficult to electrify.

Key questions

  • Where does hydrogen offer an advantage over alternative solutions?

  • How do electricity supply and infrastructure affect delivered costs and emissions?

  • What conditions would support sustained commercial adoption?
